Starting a business is exciting, but no one really talks about the nerves that come with it. The overthinking, the endless to-do lists, and the feeling that your idea might be bigger than you can handle. Starting a business with my sister has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, but it has also been incredibly challenging in ways I didn’t expect.
One task quickly turns into ten, and before you know it, you’re managing what feels like a million moving parts. That’s why one of the first and most important steps is getting clear on your foundation. Start by outlining what your business is, what services you offer, and who you’re trying to reach. From there, the real work begins—figuring out how to make it unique, creative, and something people actually connect with.
A lot of people jump into starting a business without doing enough research, and that’s where problems start to show up later. Preparation builds confidence. My sister and I began working on our business back in September 2025, and now, with our launch date set for April 1st, we’ve spent eight months preparing. Could we have launched sooner? Probably. But between balancing work and life, we chose to give ourselves realistic timelines and build something we’re truly proud of.
There’s this idea online that you can launch a successful business overnight, but the truth is, it takes time. Understanding the back end of your business is essential, especially when it comes to building an online presence. The website I designed took around seven months to complete, and that’s because there’s so much more to it than just photos and text. SEO, meta descriptions, titles, and structure all play a huge role in getting your business noticed. Even with experience in web design, it was still a time investment.
Our business focuses on social media and photography support, along with Toronto-inspired products that complement our services. We truly live and breathe Toronto, but in a way that goes beyond surface-level trends. Our goal is to help small Toronto businesses grow their presence online with services that are both creative and affordable.
We’ve also had to put in the work behind the scenes, including offering shoots and templates for free to build our portfolio. That’s something people don’t always talk about. There’s no shortcut to success. Anyone telling you that you can make money instantly with minimal effort isn’t being honest. Building something real takes time, consistency, and a lot of effort.
As of right now, we haven’t made any money yet, and that’s okay. Our launch is tomorrow, and what matters most is that we’ve built a strong foundation. We’ve put in the time, the energy, and the care to create something meaningful.
If you’re feeling nervous about starting your own business, just know that you’re not supposed to have it all figured out. Confidence doesn’t come from being perfect, it comes from being prepared and willing to learn as you go.
We’re just getting started, and while we don’t know exactly what House Of Rout will grow into, we do know this: we’re passionate, we’re ready, and we’re building something we believe in. And that’s more than enough!
