A behind-the-scenes look at our recent photoshoot with Red Bear Coffee, and why coffee and matcha catering are quickly becoming a staple of healthy workplace culture in Toronto.
Yesterday, I (Alicia) had the pleasure of photographing Laura, the founder of Red Bear Coffee, right on the patio of her own home here in Toronto. It was an overcast afternoon, the kind of soft, diffused light that photographers dream about, and it gave every single shot this calm, almost angelic glow. Watching Laura talk about her coffee, you could feel exactly how much heart she's poured into building this brand. It got me thinking about why coffee, and its trendy counterpart matcha, have become so much more than a morning habit lately, especially inside the workplace.
The Wellness Trend Brewing in Corporate Culture
Corporate wellness used to mean a yoga class once a quarter and a bowl of fruit in the breakroom. That's changing fast. More companies are realizing that taking care of employees, mentally and physically, isn't a nice-to-have anymore, it's become a real business priority. And one of the simplest, most universally loved ways to do that is through something people are already reaching for every single day: coffee and matcha.
Corporate coffee and matcha catering has quietly become one of the most requested additions to office wellness days, client events, and even product launches across Toronto. Setting up a proper matcha bar or coffee station for an event is an easy way to bring a little ritual, a little calm, and a lot of flavour into the workday, without asking anyone to roll out a yoga mat or sit through another wellness webinar.
The Antioxidant Power Behind Your Daily Cup
Beyond the comfort factor, coffee and matcha both pack a serious antioxidant punch. Coffee is one of the largest sources of dietary antioxidants for the average person, thanks largely to compounds called chlorogenic acids, which help the body fight off oxidative stress. Matcha takes it even further. Because you're consuming the whole tea leaf in powdered form rather than steeping it and tossing it out, you get a much more concentrated dose of catechins, especially EGCG, one of the most studied antioxidants in nutrition science.
In other words, that latte or matcha you're sipping during a 2pm meeting is doing a lot more behind the scenes than just waking you up.
More Than a Pick-Me-Up: Coffee and Matcha as Healthy Stimulants
Coffee and matcha both contain caffeine, but the way that caffeine shows up in the body is a little different for each one. Matcha's caffeine is paired with L-theanine, an amino acid that's been shown to promote a calmer, more focused kind of alertness rather than the jittery spike some people get from coffee alone. Coffee, on the other hand, delivers a faster, more direct energy boost, which is exactly why it's stayed a workplace staple for centuries.
Used thoughtfully, both are a far healthier stimulant choice than sugary energy drinks or yet another can of pop, and they fit naturally into a workday without anyone needing to overhaul their habits.
The Surprising Link Between Coffee and Brain Health
Here's the part that really stuck with me. A 2026 study from Mass General Brigham and Harvard researchers, published in JAMA and built on decades of data from the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, found that adults with the highest intake of caffeinated coffee, generally landing around two to three cups a day, had an 18% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who drank little to none. Interestingly, the benefit didn't increase beyond that amount, and no benefit at all showed up among people who drank decaf, suggesting caffeine itself may genuinely support long-term brain health, not just the ritual around it.
That's a pretty compelling reason to keep the coffee station stocked at the office, and it's exactly the kind of research Laura and the Red Bear Coffee team take to heart when they talk about why they do what they do.
Bringing Wellness to the Workplace with Red Bear Coffee
This is exactly the gap Red Bear Coffee is stepping into. Their corporate catering service brings high-quality, thoughtfully sourced coffee and matcha directly to offices, corporate wellness days, and client events around Toronto, making it simple for companies to offer their teams something that's both a genuine treat and a genuine health benefit. Whether it's a full coffee bar for a company milestone or a matcha station for a wellness afternoon, it's a small addition to the workday that sends a clear message to employees: your wellbeing actually matters here.
Capturing the Heart Behind the Brand
Coming back to that photoshoot for a second, because I honestly can't stop thinking about it. We set up right on Laura's patio, no studio, no backdrop, just her and that soft overcast Toronto sky doing all the work for us. There's something really special about photographing someone in the space where their brand actually started. You can see it in the way she holds her cup and the way she talks about her beans. It isn't a performance, it's just Laura, and that's exactly what made the shots turn out so beautifully.
